I know there are many others in the neighborhood who have bird feeders, so I wanted to let everyone know that I've seen at least two different male house finches at my feeders in the last two days that appear to have Eye Disease, which is actually a respiratory infection that affects House Finches and has also been seen in some goldfinches and other members of that family. It is caused by a certain strain of the bacterium mycoplasm, and while it doesn't kill the birds directly, it can make the birds blind, and so they then often starve or are victims of predators. The bird I saw yesterday was very sick. The one this morning is getting there. The cornell Lab of Ornithology has an eye disease survey, and they recommend cleaning feeders regularly in a solution of 10 % bleach and letting them air dry. I'm taking my feeders down now to clean them.
