Proper TV Disposal When the Nation Goes DTV

Durham, N.C. – As television-watchers wait for the transition to digital
television (DTV) on Tuesday, February 17, Durham County Government
encourages Durham residents to prepare accordingly. For residents without
DTV ready televisions, it is necessary to purchase a converter box, have
cable or satellite service to become DTV compatible. Durham County’s
General Services Department advises residents looking for ways to toss
soon-to-be obsolete televisions to reuse or recycle their televisions.

Most analog televisions, when connected to a cable or satellite system,
are able to receive digital signals through their cable or satellite
connection. These types of televisions can be kept, resold, donated to a
charity or simply given away. Durham County’s Swap Shop accepts usable
and working items such as televisions and other electronics in an effort
to keep these items out of the landfill. At the location, residents can
leave items for reuse or take items to reuse. The Durham County Swap Shop
is located at the Redwood Road Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience Site,
located at the intersection of Redwood Road and Electra Road. The days
and hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In the situations where a television or other electronic items do not
work, citizens are encouraged to recycle marketable components such as
glass, metals and plastics. The City of Durham’s Household Hazardous
Waste Facility, located at 1900 East Club Boulevard, is a location to take
televisions or other electronics for recycling. In 2011, North
Carolinians will be banned from disposing televisions in North Carolina
landfills.
