A Look At What's Going On Inside Durham's City Hall

New Episode Begins Airing Monday, February 23 on Time Warner Cable
Channel 8

Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the February 16, 2009
Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be
featured in the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show
will begin airing on Monday, February 23 at 1:30 p.m.

City Council Clears Way for Urban Chickens

* Urban chickens are now welcome in Durham. The City Council
unanimously approved an amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance
allowing residents to keep up to 10 hens, but no roosters, in their
yards. Among the amendment's stipulations is that the chickens, their
eggs, and their waste may only be kept for personal use and cannot be
sold. A permit to keep chickens will be required, as will a second
permit to build their coops and pens. More information about the permit
process can be found on the City's Web site at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/planning.

City Moves Forward As Part of Regional Water Partnership

* The City Council authorized City Manager Tom Bonfield to
execute a Memorandum of Understanding Supporting a Regional Partnership
for Water Supply Planning. The memorandum allows the City and its
regional partners to move forward with efforts to better access water
from Jordan Lake. Don Greeley, director of the City's Department of
Water Management, explains why the regional partnership is needed and
how it is expected to benefit all of its members on the upcoming episode
of "City Hall This Week."

City Continues Strong Support of Gang Prevention Programs for At-Risk
Youth

* The City Council approved using $32,000 in Community
Development Block Grant funds to support gang prevention efforts by the
John Avery Boys and Girls Club. The organization will use the money to
help maintain and expand its Gang Prevention Through Targeted Outreach
Program. Scimarron Reed and W. Floyd Laisure, coordinator and executive
director of the John Avery Boys and Girls Club, explain what the program
is and how the funds will be used to further the City's anti-gang
programs on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Construction of Old Chapel Hill Road Park to Get Under Way Soon

* Plans for construction of the Old Chapel Hill Road Park are
moving forward. The City Council set a guaranteed maximum price of
$3,085,095 for construction of the park. The 23.7-acre park will be
located at 4800 Old Chapel Hill Road, which is adjacent to Githens
Middle School. Henri Prosperi, senior project administrator with the
City's Department of General Services, explains what features the new
park will include and why it is needed in southwest Durham on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week"

* Ted Voorhees, deputy city manager - Explains what the proposed
Jordan Lake Water Supply Nutrient Strategy is and why the City of Durham
wants it modified.

* Byron Brady, senior contract engineer for the City's
Department of Public Works - Explains why the existing pedestrian bridge
over the Durham Freeway is being replaced and how the new bridge is
expected to benefit the surrounding communities.

* Joy Mickle-Walker, downtown development coordinator for the
City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development - Discusses the
remarkable results of this year's 7 Stars Combined Campaign by City
employees to benefit the Triangle United Way.
