Durham Begins Water and Sewer Line Project
Work Located on Erwin Road and Fulton Street; No Water or Sewer Service
Will Be Disrupted
Durham, N.C. - On Monday, March 2, 2009, the City of Durham's Department
of Water Management will begin replacing water and sewer lines along
portions of Erwin Road and Fulton Street.
The work will occur on Erwin Road from the Lennox Baker Children's
Hospital to the VA Medical Center and the Duke University Medical
Center. The work on Fulton Street will occur between Shirley Street and
Elba Street. Work on both roads will take place simultaneously and is
expected to take 7-to-8 months to complete. This project will not
disrupt water or sewer service to any customers. To view a map of the
area to be affected during the project, visit the City's Web site at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/wm/pdf/ef_press_release_map.pdf.
While Erwin Road and Fulton Street will not be closed to vehicles,
traffic flow patterns will be affected as work moves along these
streets. Most of the work will be isolated to the center lanes, and
traffic will be routed along the outer lanes in each direction. To
minimize the impact on commuter traffic, most work will take place
outside of peak morning and afternoon driving hours. Some evening and
weekend work will also be required.
These projects are important to improve and reinforce the City's utility
systems' reliability and are essential to protecting public health,
providing fire protection, supporting Durham's economy, and improving
the community's quality of life.
The City has contracted with CSSI from Garner, N.C. to complete this
project. Citizens with questions or concerns should contact Jim Harding
with the City's Department of Water Management at (919) 560-4381.
