This sounds like a fun activity, to pass onto neighborhood list-serves. As I understand it, there is training and you will be in teams, so even if your level of expertise is like mine ("Umm, there's a tree over there."), you can help. If you are interested, please contact Evan at emketo at ncsu.eduRegards, patThe project is entitled: Tree Canopy Analysis for the City of Durham's Urban ForestWe recognize that the public trees in the City of Durham are a major part of the city's infrastructure and provide numerous environmental benefits, including temperature moderation and cooling, reduction of air pollutants, energy conservation, and overall increases in property values.
The purpose of the inventory is to establish a base-line of quantifiable
data about our urban forest so that we can present information to the
City Council regarding this city resource. This will enable us to take
proactive steps to managing this valuable resource.

We have partnered with the Davey Resource Group to utilize the STRATUM
(Street Tree Resource Analysis Tool for Urban Forest Managers) software
package to conduct this survey. Using our GIS system, Davey
representatives will set up a 3% statistically significant sample in the
City of Durham. Results of the sample will be extrapolated to the
entire urban forest.

In mid to late April, the Davey Resource group will come to Durham to
set up STRATUM on our city computers. Davey will then "train the
trainers" and provide us with PDA's for the purpose of data collection.
In late April, city staff will train volunteers in the proper use of the
PDA's. Mr. Evan Keto, our Project Coordinator, will ensure that
volunteer teams will be scheduled to begin actual data collection in
early May. As soon as data is collected on the PDA's it will be
downloaded into the STRATUM software package on the city computer.

Once all data is collected, a report will be generated and given to the
city council for review by the end of 2009."
