Work Continues on Water Main Break Repairs
Water Service Restored to Customers; Hoover Road Remains Closed Between
Cheek Road and Southerland Street

Durham, N.C. - Motorists in the Hoover Road area of Durham will continue
to be rerouted while City of Durham crews repair breaks in two parallel
water lines.

Due to the size of the water lines and extent of the breaks, further
repairs will be required and Hoover Road will remain closed to traffic
between Cheek Road and Southerland Street until the permanent repairs
can be completed. Repair work is dependent on weather conditions,
which may delay the repairs for several days.

The report of the water line breaks came in Tuesday morning around 3
a.m. and the City's Water Management crews were dispatched to the scene
immediately. As the crews worked, they discovered that both an 8-inch
line and a 20-inch line had broken.

Approximately 50 customers were without water service until crews were
able to install new valves in the lines. Staff reported that by
midnight Tuesday, service was restored to all customers. The initial
investigation has shown that the creek crossing under Hoover Road had
eroded the shoulder where the lines were located, causing the joints in
the two water lines to fail. Despite the disruption in service, no
water quality impacts have been noted.

For more information about the water main breaks or ongoing repairs,
residents should contact Don Greeley, director, or Vicki Westbrook,
deputy director, with the City's Department of Water Management, at
(919) 560-4381.
