FYI -- see below. Please remember to thank commissioners Brenda Howerton, Ellen Reckhow and Becky Heron for their efforts to maintain the democratic process and to ensure that any decisions made regarding the Jordan Lake Watershed Boundaries are based on accurate, unbiased data and interpretations. Thanks! Melissa (Rooney)

Howerton
showed she can stand
"If
you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."
Durham
County Commissioner Brenda Howerton showed her constituents Monday night that
she can stand. As the long acknowledged swing-vote regarding the Jordan Lake
Survey Saga, Howerton was under immense pressure from both sides.
For
the last few weeks she has run herself ragged, meeting with everyone who
asked for her ear.
In the
end, she demonstrated her dedication, accessibility, open-mindedness,
professionalism and critical thinking. It is important to clarify that she
didn't vote for or against Hunter's survey or the 751 Assemblage mini-city.
She voted to follow the procedure outlined in the UDO, which calls for public
hearings and votes from the Planning Commission, City Council and County
Commission.
Unfortunately,
this did not prevent public, verbal attacks from fellow commissioner Joe
Bowser and other unwavering supporters of the 751 Assemblage project.
Howerton
remained professional throughout. Durham citizens owe Brenda Howerton a big
thank-you for upholding the integrity of our democratic process.
