Green Durham Photography Competition Announces Winners

Winners To Be Displayed During Durham's Earth Day Festival April 25

 

Durham, N.C. - More than 200 Durham photography enthusiasts submitted their works to the first-ever Green Durham Photography Competition, and now the top 12 winners will be displayed beginning tomorrow in honor of Earth Day.

 

The Durham City-County Sustainability Office has announced the winners of the competition, which highlighted the natural and built environment in Durham.  The winning 12 photos were chosen from among over 200 submitted in seven categories (Wildlife, Plants, Habitat, Connecting People & Nature, Built Environment, Alternative Transportation, and Altered Nature).  The winners are:

·         Michael Konvicka, "Car Pancakes" (Altered Nature)

·         Aaron Lubeck (Built Environment)

·         Daniel Felts, "Capillaries of Snow" (Habitat - winner)

·         Larry Smith, "Sunset on the Eno" (Habitat - runner up)

·         Mengchi Ho, "Early Bird" (Habitat - runner up)

·         Duncan Heron, "Boy Fishing" (People & Nature)

·         Malissa Dunn, "Delicate Life" (Plants - winner)

·         Heymo Vehse, "Purple Sun Flower" (Plants -  runner up)

·         Grace Camblos, "Sepia Railroad" (Alternative Transportation - winner tie)

·         Amiris Brown, "Snow Trail" (Alternative Transportation - winner tie)

·         Dawn Franklin, "Bee Passion" (Wildlife - winner)

·         Jim Senter, "White Deer of Duke Forest" (Wildlife - runner up )

 

The winning photos will be available for public viewing at the show opening beginning Wednesday, April 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Blue Coffee Café, located at 202 N. Corcoran Street in downtown Durham, and will remain on display through May 6.  The winning photos will also be displayed during the Durham Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 25, 2009, in the CCB Plaza in downtown Durham.  

 

The Green Durham Photography Competition was organized by the Durham City-County Sustainability Office, Durham Parks and Recreation, and Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. in honor of Earth Month.  The winning photos were selected by a panel of four judges: Roylee Duvall with Through This Lens, Chuck Liddy with The News & Observer, Bill Neal with CCI Photographics, and Stephenie McLean, a local professional photographer.  Photographs were printed for the show by CCI Photographics and frames were provided by the TROSA Frame Shop.
