Durham Celebrates National Homeownership Month in June

City to Celebrate Completion of Eastway Village and Rededication of
Stewart Heights

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham has slated a month-long list of free
activities and events to celebrate National Homeownership Month and help
Durham residents become - or remain - responsible homeowners.

The City's Department of Community Development kicks off the month with
the Eastway Village Neighborhood Festival, scheduled for Saturday, June
6, 2009, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. This neighborhood celebration, designed
especially for the existing homeowners, is to acknowledge the final
phase of the Eastway Village development nearing completion with most of
the 47 single family homes and condominiums sold or under contract.

According to Tonya Wall, a new resident of Eastway Village since 2007,
her decision to purchase her first home in this revitalized location was
an easy decision to make. "Eastway Village is affordable, attractive,
and convenient to my job. I am glad to see the diversity among my
neighbors and I take pride in living in Eastway Village," Wall said. "I
am currently a block captain in my neighborhood and a PAC 1 member. I
think my neighbors are great because we all believe in reaching out to
others in the community. A special thank you goes out to Mayor Bell,
Durham City Council, City of Durham employees, and Blue Ridge
Construction for having the vision and commitment for the revitalization
of the old Barnes Avenue area. It's wonderful to see so many caring
people involved in improving the quality of life in Northeast Central
Durham."

In addition, the City will host the Stewart Heights Rededication
Ceremony and Open House on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, from 4:30 p.m. to
6:30 p.m. Located at the intersection of Cornwallis and Fayetteville
Roads, this event will celebrate the newly renovated Stewart Heights
Development, formerly the Mutual Heights Development. This community
boasts 147 affordable rental units and has been home for many households
for more than 50 years.

According to long-time resident Cora Adams, the recent upgrades to her
home of 32 years are much appreciated. "Before I moved here in 1977,
Mutual Heights had always had a reputation as a quiet community and has
remained so over the years. I have enjoyed living here and would
recommend it to anyone," Adams said. "I am particularly grateful for
the upgrades to my home such as air conditioning, a tub and shower unit,
and a larger kitchen. Mutual Heights has changed over the years and I
feel it has changed for the better. Nothing stays the same, but I'm
glad I was here to see it."

On Thursday, June 11, 2009, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the City will host
a "HomeWorkshop" to help educate existing homeowners about homeownership
responsibilities, such as proper home maintenance and repairs as well as
the importance of lawn care. Co-sponsored by the City's Department of
Community Development, Durham Community Land Trustees, and Self-Help
Credit Union, the event will also provide homeownership and financial
information as well as information on first-time home buyer (FTHB)
program guidelines, applications, foreclosure assistance information,
homelessness prevention information, fair housing brochures, and
substantial homebuyer tax credit information. This free event, which
will be held at the Center for Responsible Lending Building, 302 West
Main Street, will feature refreshments and families with children are
welcome.

Finally, on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the City
will host the Rosedale Street Open House in recognition of two newly
renovated single family homes at 1030 and 1031 Rosedale Avenue and two
newly renovated rental units located at 1032 and 1034 Rosedale Avenue.

For more information on any of these events, or to learn more about
homeownership, foreclosure assistance, homelessness prevention, fair
housing information, or homebuyer tax credits, call the City's
Homeownership Hotline at (919) 560-4000 or log onto the City's Web site
at www.durhamnc.gov/departments/comdev.
