Fast Facts:

· In honor of May as Youth Gang Awareness Month, the Mayor's Hispanic/Latino Inclusion Program, which is coordinated by the City of Durham's Department of Human Relations, is hosting an anti-gang summit for Hispanic/Latinos parents in Durham.

· The program will provide parents with information on the dangers of gang life, how to spot if their child is involved in a gang, and information on how to keep their children safe from gang activities. This event will be conducted in both English and Spanish.

· According to Yvonne Peña, director of the City's Department of Human Relations, this summit is an important outreach tool not only to parents, who are the first line of defense in keeping children out of a gang, but to all others in Durham's Latino community who have a stake in keeping children out of gangs. "We need to safe guard all of our children, for while they are only 20 percent of our current population, they are 100 percent of our future," Peña said. "This summit will help us reach out not only to parents, but all members of the Durham's Hispanic/Latino community on what to do if they suspect gang activity."

· Presenters at the Anti-Gang Summit include representatives from the Durham Police Department as well as a social worker. El Centro Hispano, Inc. and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church are also partners in this event.
