Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the June 1, 2009 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Monday, June 8 at 1:30 p.m. and will also be available to
watch on demand on the City's Web site at
www.durhamnc.gov/dtv8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

Residents Speak Out on Proposed Budget

* City Council members are now considering the final round of public
input as they begin to put the finishing touches on the 2009-2010
Budget. A public hearing during Monday night's meeting gave Durham
residents a chance to let the Council know what they think about the
administration's proposed $344 million spending plan. Additional work
sessions are scheduled for June 4 and 5. The Council will adopt the
budget on June 15.

Public Hearing Set on Application for Additional Federal Recovery Funds

* A public hearing will be held on June 15 to allow residents to
speak out on the City's application for neighborhood stabilization
funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. To qualify
for the at least $5 million in funding, projects have to have a minimum
of 100 units of foreclosed properties in an area. Larry Jarvis,
assistant director of the City's Community Development Department,
explains which project the City would like to see funded on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."

Minor Naming Rights Contracts Finalized for Durham Performing Arts
Center

* Four additional minor naming rights contracts have been finalized
for the Durham Performing Arts Center. The Trapani Family Charitable
Fund will pay $19,000, Skanska USA Building will pay $23,000, American
Safety Products will pay $1,000, and the North Carolina Institute of
Minority Economic Development will pay $1,000. Minor naming rights
represent the smaller opportunities ranging from signs above offices, to
conference rooms, to names on seats.

Significant Citywide Sidewalk Repair Project Set to Begin

* The City Council approved using $444,503 in 2005 bond funds to pay
for a Citywide Sidewalk Repair Project. The project involves the
installation of approximately 8,000 linear feet of sidewalk repairs and
10 curb cut ramp repairs at various locations throughout the city. A
retaining wall on Stadium Drive will also be relocated as part of the
project.

Other interviews featured on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This
Week":

* Donald Long, director of the City's Solid Waste Management
Department - Explains some significant changes in the way the City's
recycling, yard waste, and bulky items are collected.

* Katie Kalb, director of the City's Public Works Department -
Explains how the demolition and replacement of the pedestrian bridge
over the Durham Freeway at Alston Avenue is expected to affect traffic
and to benefit communities on both sides of the bridge.

* Paul Wiebke, assistant stormwater manager for the City's
Public Works Department - Explains how the City is taking a proactive
approach to expected new state requirements regarding stormwater
retrofitting.
