North Carolina is home to more hogs than
people; and with 10 million hogs generating about 13 million
pounds of hog waste per day, we’ve got a seriously stinky
problem on our hands of how to properly dispose of this raw
waste in a manner that doesn’t affect our water supplies,
or quality of life.
The North Carolina
Environmental Management Commission (EMC) has now agreed that
industrial animal operations should be required to
monitor waterways running through their waste spray
fields and have proposed a rule to make this happen.
However there’s intense amounts of money and opposition
from the powerful pork industry flowing to stop this rule
- we need your help to get this rule passed!

Click here to take action now! http://ncconservationnetwork1.org/campaign/caforule09
Such water quality monitoring will be a highly
effective and reasonable way for the state and the pork industry
to determine if current practices are protective of our
state’s water resources. All other industries are already
required to monitor their waste discharge, and it is past time
for this industry to be held to similar standards.
Take action today & let the EMC
know that you want this rule to be passed & our water
protected!

P.S. The fifth and final Pollution
Superstar is...Exxon Mobil! You probably
know all about their past misdeeds, but check out our blog to find out why we’ve
given them our Pollution Superstar award. And thanks to everyone
who made a donation to support our work of
fighting polluters this summer!
