Durham City Council Supports Obama Administration's Health Care Reform

Council Passed Resolution of Support at June 15 Meeting

DURHAM, N.C. - The Durham City Council has joined 10 North Carolina
legislators in support of President Barack Obama's efforts to pass
comprehensive health care reform, including the choice of a public
health insurance option, this year.

At the June 15th City Council meeting, the Council adopted a resolution
in support of the Obama Administration's health care reform principles.
After adopting the resolution, the City Council sent a copy to each
member of the North Carolina Congressional Delegation. The City Council
has joined the nationwide movement of state lawmakers, which now number
over 600 state legislators from 46 states, who support the president's
health care reform.

According to Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell, the Council's support of
health care reform is vital since cities are often on the frontlines of
dealing with the current health care crisis thanks to high rates of
uninsured residents and rapidly escalating costs that affect residents,
businesses, and workers.

"Our City government spends millions of dollars to provide health care
coverage for our employees, their families, and our retirees," Bell
said. "Rising health care costs impact our ability to pay for other
City services and programs. Couple that issue with the fact that
thousands of Durham residents lack health insurance and are taxing our
public health care system beyond its capabilities. We, as a community
and a nation, must work together to craft comprehensive health care
reform. All of us should be willing to make some sacrifices to gain a
comprehensive health care system for all."
