Durham People's Alliance

Legislative Forum this Wednesday, September 23!

What did they do in Raleigh?

     Dear David,

The Durham People's Alliance is sponsoring aDurham Legislative Forum on Wednesday, September 23, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the Stanford L. Warren branch of the Durham Public Library, 1201 Fayetteville St., in Durham.  This forum will be an opportunity for legislators to provide information about the latest legislative session, and for citizens to ask questions and discuss concerns about state legislation.  The format will allow time for each legislator to speak for 3-5 minutes, followed by a question and answer session.   (Reps Paul Luebke, Larry Hall, Mickey Michaux, W. A. Wilkins & Sen Floyd McKissick are confirmed).

If you google "2009 NC Legislative Accomplishments", you'll find hundreds of points of view.   Here are just a couple to remind you of the trials, tribulations and triumphs of this year's legislative session:

(1)  NC Action for Children:   "The state operating budget for the next biennium is a very painful budget for children.   While American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds kept public education cuts relatively low, health and human services took a huge hit. A hefty cut was also taken in services for at-risk and court-involved youth, out of a juvenile justice budget that was already inadequate to meet the need."   http://www.ncchild.org/action/content/blogcategory/____105/315/

(2)  2009 Legislative Session Brings Major Progress for LGBT North Carolinians       http://equalitync.org/news1/2009-legislative-session-brings-major-progress-for-lgbt-north-carolinians

(a) Blocked the proposed marriage discrimination constitutional amendment.

(b) Passed the School Violence Prevention Act to address bullying and harassment in schools, including acts targeting LGBT students.

(c) Passed the Healthy Youth Act to provide young people with life-saving information about disease prevention as part of a comprehensive sex education program in grades 7-9.

FUNDING PROVIDED BY THE PEOPLE'S ALLIANCE FUND

Sincerely,

Durham People's Alliance
