Foodborne Disease Investigation in Durham
April 27, 2010
Durham, NC - The Durham County Health Department (DCHD) is investigating an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea among persons who ate food prepared at Bullock's Barbecue, located at 3330 Quebec Drive in Durham, since April 20, 2010. Only a few persons have reported illnesses, and are being followed by the Health Department. Early laboratory results suggest Salmonella as the cause of the illnesses, but further confirmation at the North Carolina State Laboratory is necessary. The restaurant has cooperated with DCHD officials and conducted the proper disposal and clean-up of potentially affected food items and equipment.
The symptoms associated with this illness are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever that can be self-limited or last several days. The symptoms typically begin within 72 hours after an exposure, but some persons may develop illness up to a week after eating potentially contaminated food items or beverages. Young children, the elderly, and persons with other medical problems are at greater risk for dehydration and serious illness from food-borne infections and may require hospitalization. Replacing fluids with water and juices is important to prevent dehydration from any gastrointestinal illness.
In general, persons who have not developed symptoms in the week following a meal from the restaurant have very little risk of developing future illness. Persons who have eaten food from the restaurant since April 20th with any of the symptoms above should contact their primary health care provider. Individuals with a diarrheal illness that is accompanied by any of the following should seek medical care:
high fever (temperature over 101.5° F, measured orally)
blood in the stools
prolonged vomiting that prevents keeping liquids down (which can lead to dehydration)
signs of dehydration, including a decrease in urination, a dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up.
diarrheal illness that lasts more than 3 days
For any questions or to report a gastrointestinal illness in the past week associated with this restaurant, please contact the Durham County Health Department Call-line at 919-560-7882.
