Durham Celebrates National Homeownership Month in June

Celebration Includes Non-Profit HOME Tour and Williams Square Dedication
Ceremony June 11th

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham has slated a week-long list of free
activities and events to celebrate National Homeownership Month and help
Durham residents become - or remain - responsible homeowners.

The City's Department of Community Development kicks off the month with
a June 2 feature story entitled, "The City of Durham Brings Leora Cherry
and Her Family Home." The story, slated to appear in The Herald-Sun,
will focus on Leora Cherry, a first-time homebuyer who purchased her
home with the assistance of the City's Down Payment Assistance Program.
Following this feature story, the Durham City Council will issue a
National Homeownership Month Proclamation during its June 7 meeting.

On Thursday, June 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the City will host a
"HomeWorkshop" to help educate existing homeowners citywide about home
maintenance, home repairs, lawn care, etc. There will also be
homeownership and financial information available. A table display at
the event will also provide information on first-time homebuyer program
guidelines, applications, foreclosure assistance information,
homelessness prevention information, fair housing brochures, and
substantial homebuyer tax credit information. Free refreshments will be
provided and children are welcome. The event will be held at the City's
Department of Community Development, located in the Golden Belt
Conference Room, 807 E. Main Street, Building 2, 3rd Floor. This event
is co-sponsored by the City's Department of Community Development,
Durham Community Land Trustees, and Self-Help Credit Union.

The week-long observance culminates on Friday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. with a HOME Tour followed by the Williams Square Dedication
Ceremony and Luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. The HOME Tour, which will
depart from 807 E. Main Street at 10 a.m., will showcase non-profits who
develop homeownership and rental opportunities within the Durham
community. Participants in the HOME Tour will also get to hear the
first-hand story of Michael Kelly, a formerly homeless man who is now a
Habitat homeowner. The tour will end at the Williams Square Dedication
Ceremony and Luncheon. Located at 501 E. Carver Street, Williams Square
is a newly constructed 24-unit, energy efficient rental housing
community. News media are invited to attend both the tour and the
dedication ceremony. To reserve a seat on the HOME Tour or for more
information on the dedication ceremony, contact Juanita Massenburg,
senior project manager with the City's Department of Community
Development, at (919) 560-4570, ext. 22240 or via e-mail at
juanita.massenburg at durhamnc.gov.

Durham's National Homeownership Month is co-sponsored with Durham
Community Land Trustees, Self Help Credit Union, Habitat for Humanity,
Durham Regional Association of Realtors, Housing for New Hope, DHIC,
Builders of HOPE, Volunteers of America, SunTrust Mortgage, County of
Durham, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and
NeighborWorks America.
