City Council Receives Public Input on Proposed $353.4 Million Budget

The City Council is now considering the final round of public input as
it puts the finishing touches on the 2010-2011 budget. A public hearing
during Monday night's meeting gave residents a chance to let the Council
know what they think of the administration's proposed $353.4 million
spending plan. The proposed budget includes a 1.19 cents property tax
increase, which would raise the average annual tax bill by $19.24. The
Council will adopt the budget on June 21.

First Quarter Crime Report Shows Increase

The Durham Police Department's first quarter crime report shows an
increase in violent and property crimes for the first quarter average
for 2005-2009. Violent crime was up eight percent for the first three
months of the year over the five-year average, and property crime was up
nine percent over the same amount of time. Police Chief Jose Lopez Sr.
explains what the department is doing to combat these numbers and what
members of the community can do as well on the upcoming episode of "City
Hall This Week."

City Increases Some Solid Waste Disposal Fees

The price for the City to dispose of some solid waste, as well as for
residents to rent a roll-off container for extra heavy loads, is going
up. The City Council approved increasing the solid waste disposal, or
tipping, fee by 50 cents - making it now $42.50 per ton. It also agreed
to increase the fee for disposing of extra heavy roll-off containers
that can be brought to homes or businesses. In order to recover the
costs for disposal, the rental fees will now be $130 for 24 hours and
$170 for a weekend. If the tonnage is over three tons when the
container is picked up, an additional $45 will be charged.
