Durham Begins Three Trail Repair Projects Next Week

Projects Begin Week of July 12; Trail Closures Can Be Expected During
Project Timeframe

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning Monday, July 12, 2010, the American Tobacco
Trail, the Riddle Road Spur Trail, and a portion of the North/South
Trail will be undergoing repairs and resurfacing. Sections of these
trails will be closed as this work is underway.

Over the next few weeks, the City of Durham's contractor will repair
asphalt and resurface the American Tobacco Trail and the Riddle Road
Spur Trail. The contractor will also place stone on the shoulders of
the trail. During the duration of this project, the contractor will need
to close up to two sections of the trail at a time and plans to use two
crews in order to expedite the work. A section is considered to be a
portion of trail between two access points, such as the section between
Otis and Enterprise Streets. Restriping and replacement of mile markers
will follow as soon as the resurfacing portion of the project is
complete.

Repairs and resurfacing will also begin next week on the portion of the
North/South Trail between Lavender Street and Murray Avenue. This
project, scheduled to last approximately two weeks, will also undergo
restriping and replacement of mile markers as soon as the resurfacing
portion of the project is complete.

The trail projects, funded by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act
(ARRA), will cost $297,550. More information about these trail projects
can be found on the City's website at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/works/project_ST-246.cfm.

Since this work may cause an inconvenience to trail users, the new
Durham Bike and Hike Map may provide guidance on alternate routes. The
map can be found on the City's website at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/transportation/bike_hike_map.cfm.

Any questions about these ARRA projects may also be directed to Tim
Jackson, civil engineer with the City's Department of Public Works, at
(919) 560-4326, ext. 30255 or via e-mail at Tim.Jackson at durhamnc.gov.
