Durham Seeks Applicants for Sign Grants Program

Applications Reviewed on a First-come, First-served Basis

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham business owners interested in installing or
enhancing signage at their business should take note of a new grant
opportunity now available through the City of Durham. The City's Office
of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) is now accepting
applications for its Sign Grants Program within targeted areas inside
the city limits.

The objective of the OEWD's Sign Grants Program is to improve the
pedestrian experience in select neighborhoods inside the city limits by
enhancing the visibility and appearance of businesses through signage
that is physically, historically, and architecturally compatible with
relevant design guidelines. Information and guidance on signs may be
found on the City-County Inspections Department Web page at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/inspections/signs.cfm.

Eligible projects within the community development area (CDA) outside of
downtown; within targeted corridors inside the CDA; or within targeted
areas of the urban growth area (UGA) are encouraged to apply. The
targeted corridors inside the CDA are Angier Avenue and Driver Street;
West Chapel Hill Street; Mangum Street; Fayetteville Street; East Main
Street; and Holloway Street. The targeted areas within the UGA are
Wellon's Village, North Roxboro Road, and Avondale Drive.

Grants are dollar-for-dollar matching grants up to 50 percent of the
documented project cost related to the design, fabrication, and
installation of signage, with a maximum grant award of $2,500 per
business. Funds will be provided through reimbursement upon completion
of the project and submission of appropriate documentation proving
compliance with relevant design guidelines and costs.

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis with
funding subject to availability. A decision as to funding will be made
within 10 business days of OEWD receiving a completed grant application.
OEWD will review select evaluation criteria, including illumination and
aesthetics of signage, in determining funding awards. Projects must
start no later than nine months and be completed within one year of OEWD
grant approval.

For a complete description of the grant application guidelines and
application process, visit the City's website at
www.durhameconomicdevelopment.org. Interested applicants for proposed
projects may also contact Peter Coyle, cultural and business initiatives
coordinator with the City's OEWD, via e-mail at
Peter.Coyle at durhamnc.gov.

Additionally, the City has a sign grants program for proposed projects
within downtown Durham. This program is administered by Downtown Durham,
Inc. (DDI). For information about the downtown sign grants program,
contact DDI at (919) 682-2800.
