Bull City Connector Bus Shelter Art Workshop

You are  invited to join Durham Area Designers, other workshop participants 
from the  community and chosen local artists in developing ideas for art 
for the unique  transit shelters proposed for the new Bull City Connector 
route. This design  workshop will be held on Saturday, August 14th from 9 AM to 
1:30 PM at Rigsbee  Hall, 208 Rigsbee Avenue. 
The Bull City Connector is a new bus route that  will ultimately connect 
Duke University to Durham's downtown and NC Central  University with stops at 
numerous locations in between. The bus service is  envisioned as having a 
higher level of service and amenities for riders. As  part of the amenities, 
DAD is proposing the creation of unique bus stops to be  developed with the 
assistance of local artists which reference present-day  edgy and progressive 
Durham as well as the rich, local history of the various  places in the 
community marking the important destinations along the  route.
During the charrette, teams will be composed of a facilitator from  DAD, an 
artist, and workshop participants. Each team will pick or be assigned  a 
stop location to design. DAD will research and gather historical information  
about the surrounding areas, and persons identified as resources will be  
interviewed prior to the charrette (who may be available for the exercise).  
This information will be presented at the start of the charrette in an  
introductory talk and to the individual teams by DAD facilitators during the  
design process.
The teams will then explore options for context-influenced  art for each 
bus shelter, choose their best designs, and refine them  throughout the 
exercise. The workshop will include intermediate presentations  of the design 
ideas in order to obtain feedback from various stakeholders in  the process.
