Applicants Sought for the 2011 Durham Master Gardener Program

July 23, 2010

Interested individuals must attend an upcoming information session

Durham, N.C. - Durham is home to many beautiful and healthy gardens, many of which are works of art created by residents involved in Durham County Extension's Master Gardener Program.

In coming weeks, Durham County Cooperative Extension will host several information sessions for residents interested in the 2011 Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training Class. Durham's master gardeners are a diverse group of community volunteers that provide unbiased, research based educational assistance and programs in horticulture and environmental issues to the gardening public. Volunteers certified through the Master Gardener Program are trained to represent the land grant universities in providing research based answers to questions on a wide variety of gardening, landscaping, and lawn care topics. Residents interested in becoming master gardeners, must attend one of four information sessions offered the following dates and times:

August 19
12 - 2 p.m.
  August 25
10 a.m. -12 p.m.
September 8
10 a.m. -12 p.m. September 29
12 - 2 p.m.

All information sessions will be offered at the Durham County Cooperative Extension Office, located at 721 Foster Street. The 25 residents selected for the program will attend trainings from January 12, 2011 to April 27, 2011. There is a $120 training fee for residents accepted into the program and a limited number of scholarships are available if needed. Residents from diverse ethnic backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply to the program.

For more information about the Master Gardener Program, contact the Durham County Extension Master Gardner Office at 919-560-0528.
