New "City Hall This Week" Begins Tonight

 

DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the August 2, 2010 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."  

 

The show will begin airing on Friday, August 6 at 8 p.m. and will also
be available to watch "on demand" at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8. 

 

City Council Approves Contract to Upgrade City Website 

Visiting the City's Website will soon be more of an interactive
experience for City employees and residents alike.  The City Council
approved a $265,000 contract to be spent on the design, development, and
implementation of a series of upgrades and improvements that will
transform the website from its current informational format into a more
useful form of communication.  Technology Solutions Director Kerry Goode
explains what changes will be made and how they will benefit employees
and residents on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

Ellerbe Creek Project Set to Begin

The effort to improve the water quality in Ellerbe Creek is entering a
new phase. The City Council approved the temporary construction easement
and the subsequent permanent conservation easement deed for the Ellerbe
Creek stream enhancement and stabilization project.  The Council's
action now allows construction on the project to begin. Stormwater
Services Acting Manager Paul Wiebke explains what is involved with the
project and why it is important for the future of Ellerbe Creek and
Falls Lake on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

City Council Approves Planning Projects for 2010-2011

The Durham City-County Planning Department's list of highest priorities
for 2010-2011 is now in place.  The City Council approved the
department's work program for this year, which includes emphasis on
about 20 high-priority projects.  Some of the projects have been in the
works for a while and others focus on new or re-prioritized areas of
importance for the City and County.  City-County Planning Director
Steven Medlin explains what some of those projects are on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

City Accepts Federal Employment and Training Grants to Benefit Two
Companies

Employees at two Durham companies will have a chance to update their
skills through Employment and Training Grants provided by the federal
government. The Workforce Investment Act grants that have been accepted
by the City Council are allocated through the N.C. Division of Workforce
Development.  Sustainable Building Solutions has been awarded $23,105 to
provide 11 of their workers with energy efficiency trainings.   Health
Decisions, Inc. was awarded $25,000 to provide 34 employees with
software, financial, and project training.

*         City Manager Tom Bonfield - Introduces the Bull City
Connector, Durham's new fast and free way of getting around downtown
Durham. 

*         Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell - Explains why the City Council
decided to put a $20,000,000 General Obligation Street Bond Referendum
on the November 2 ballot.

*         Evelyn Scott, senior community relations coordinator for the
City's Office on Youth - Explains why the opening of the City's new Teen
Center is an important milestone for Durham's young people.

 

"City Hall This Week" is a news program dedicated to informing Durham
residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall.  Each
edition is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day
after City Council meetings.  It airs twice a day on DTV8 (Time Warner
Cable channel 8) through the week of the next City Council meeting.
