Durham Begins Anderson Street Resurfacing Sept. 7

Project Permanently Removes On-Street Parking to Allow for New Bicycle
Lanes

DURHAM, N.C. - On September 7, 2010, the City of Durham will begin
resurfacing a portion of Anderson Street through Duke University's
Central Campus, permanently removing 37 on-street parking spaces to
provide for new bicycle lanes.

The project, funded with 2005 and 2007 bond funds, will resurface
Anderson Street between Erwin Road and Campus Drive, followed by
striping of new bicycle lanes. The project is expected to last
approximately one week, weather permitting. Vehicle and pedestrian
traffic will be maintained throughout the resurfacing project, but minor
motorist delays should be expected and motorists are advised to use
alternate routes if possible. The City's contractor will also be
resurfacing Anderson Street between Duke University Road and Morehead
Avenue during this same time period.

According to Dale McKeel, bicycle and pedestrian coordinator for the
City of Durham's Department of Transportation, the project is underway
as part of Durham's Comprehensive Bicycle Transportation Plan, which
recommends that bicycle lanes be provided on this section of Anderson
Street. "This project is especially needed in this area due to the
significant increase in the number of cyclists around Duke and the need
to provide a safer way for them to travel," McKeel said. "More
transportation options also helps the City reach its goal of creating
better mobility and connectivity in Durham, which ultimately helps us
reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and gets us closer to reaching
our goals in the Durham Greenhouse Gas Emissions Plan. As more residents
choose to bike rather than drive, then less harmful emissions are
released into our environment."

According to Samuel Veraldi, director of Duke University Parking &
Transportation Services, the project also supports Duke's goal of
becoming a carbon-neutral campus by 2024 by promoting bicycling as a
more sustainable means of travel. "We have more than doubled the number
of registered bikers in the last year as a result of an incentive
program for faculty and staff and a bike loan program for students,"
said Veraldi. "Creating designated bike lanes on streets like Anderson
make it easier and safer for people to travel by bike and will encourage
others to give it a try."
