[Durham INC] [durhamenviro] FYI: Burlington Times-News: Local documentary will raise air quality concerns

Thanks, Jeff.

The 3 medical waste incinerators in NC (Stericycle has 2 in Graham and another
in Matthews called BMWNC) are not “plasma converters,” but basically just
burners. I have been told by those who know far more than I about this issue
that "plasma is bad as well, that they are incinerators and they pollute,
although their proponents say they are clean. There are alternatives to medical
waste incineration and that includes autoclaving, a steam/sterilization process.
That’s our goal – to get Stericycle to switch to a more environmentally-friendly
method of disposal and to shut down the other medical waste incinerator in
Matthews or get them to make the switch also."

For more info see the two documents attached.

Thanks for engaging discussion on this!

Melissa

This system has been available for years and has expend or become more
efficient. Medical waste is easily and safely disposed of in plasma conversion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STARTECH ENVIRONMENTAL PLASMA CONVERTER INSTALLATION FIRST IN POLAND AND FIRST
IN EUROPE

WILTON, CT, April 7, 2008 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Startech Environmental Corp. (OTC
Bulletin Board: STHK), a fully reporting, internationally recognized
Award-winning Environment and Energy company announced today that
"waste2greenenergy (w2ge)," the Company's distributor for the United Kingdom
and for the Republic of Poland, intends to install its first Plasma Converter
System at a designated facility in Bytom, Poland to process ten-tons of
industrial waste per day.

Joseph F. Longo, Startech president, said, "The Bytom installation is
especially important to the Company because it is the opener to the entire
European market including the large market in Poland that has been a long time
in development. The Plasma Converter, purchased by w2ge last August and being
manufactured now, will be the first in Europe."

John Cameron, w2ge's Chief Operating Officer said, "We are very excited
regarding the prospects for Startech's Plasma Converter System. We have a very
strong pipeline of projects in Poland and anticipate the Bytom facility being
the first of many Plasma Converter Systems which we will install in Poland.
Poland is one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union and is a
key market for w2ge. Poland has embraced plasma technology in its environmental
laws as one of the preferred technologies for the safe disposal of industrial
wastes. Bytom will be the first operational Plasma Converter System in the
European Union and will operate as a flagship for Startech's unique Plasma
Converter technology.

>Michael D. Abernethy / Times-News
>Gearing up for a Sept. 7 public hearing on air quality standards, an
>environmental group will show a locally produced documentary about medical
>waste incineration practices at four locations next week.
>The documentary, “Burning Issues in Medical Waste Incineration,” focuses on
>possible impacts of Stericycle Inc.’s waste incinerator, located on the
>Graham-Haw River border. The documentary uses interviews with residents and
>scientists about the dangers of and alternatives to medical waste
>incineration.
>The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League hopes the documentary will spark
>questions and encourage people to attend a state hearing on medical waste
>incineration at UNC-Greensboro on Sept. 7, says Sue Dayton, the league’s N.C.
>Healthy Communities director. The state will hear comments on the
>implementation of new Environmental Protection Agency rules regarding air
>quality, which are anticipated to go into effect statewide in 2014. The new
>rules require stricter emissions standards for heavy metals and other
>potentially toxic substances.
>In response to the impending renewal of Stericycle Inc.’s state incineration
>permit, the league has lobbied local elected bodies to support and pass a
>resolution asking the state to implement the EPA rules in 2012. The city of
>Graham and the Alamance County Board of Commissioners declined to pass the
>resolution. The town of Haw River , the city of Mebane and the Orange County
>Board of Commissioners passed the resolution. The city of Burlington has yet
>to be presented with the resolution.
>The league and other concerned parties worry that medical waste incineration
>releases toxins into the air and water, affecting wildlife, food sources and
>public health. The group cites cancer statistics and warns of other health
>risks for developing fetuses, infants, children and the elderly. They want
>companies like Stericycle to use newer and cleaner practices for medical
>waste disposal, such as autoclaves.
>The short documentary was produced several years ago by Sanford Lewis,
>Massachusetts-based attorney for Health Care Without Harm — an international
>group of medical professionals, health care establishments and environmental
>and other groups.
>Daytonsays the league will follow the film with a discussion of current
>emissions standards versus the updated emissions standards and how they would
>improve air quality in Alamance and surrounding counties.
>The film will be shown Monday at 7 p.m. at the Upper Chatham Lower Alamance
>Community Center (the old Cornucopia building), 3 miles south of Eli Whitney
>on N.C. 87 south.; Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mebane Public Library, 101 S. First
>St., Mebane; Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the General Store Café, 39 West St.,
