Please see below. I wish I could be more involved in this...but for those of you
who are seriously concerned, this is a great way to educate yourselves medical
incinerators of any kind, their dangers, and what we are to expect wrt
protections on the Haw River and in NC. Please pass this on to anyone you know
who would be interested or who lives near the site of the medical
incinerator(s).

Dear Melissa,
Please read the message below from Elaine Chiosso, Director, Haw River Assembly
and our Haw Riverkeeper, regarding mercury impaired rivers in NC.
The Haw River is considered impaired for mercury, as are all the waters of the
state.
Stericycle Medical Waste Incinerator, Graham, NC
Obviously, coal fired power plants in NC are responsible for the largest amounts
of mercury pollution to our rivers, but medical waste incinerators are
considered to be the second-largest source of mercury in the environment
(*Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry report on Mercury, December,
1997).
Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that damages the body's central nervous system.
It can also damage the brain, kidneys and lungs, and methylmercury (what it
turns into after it hits surface water) is considered a possible human
carcinogen. Young children and pregnant women are especially at risk.
BMWNC medical waste incinerator in Matthews = mercury 3.5 times new EPA
standards
Stericycle medical waste incinerator in Graham = mercury 10.6 times new EPA
standards.
We will be arranging a carpool to the PUBLIC HEARING on the new rules for
medical waste incinerators next Tuesday, September 7, at 7 p.m. at UNC
Greensboro. We will likely leave the area around 5 p.m. to get there a bit early
and set up a table at the hearing with information about medical waste
incineration. Please let me know if you are interested in a ride!

Hat-makers used to use mercury to strengthen their hats, and in the process
breathed in mercury vapors.
