Durham Hosts Paper Shredding & E-Scrap Recycling Event Oct. 2

Free and Convenient Event Open to All Durham Residents and Businesses

DURHAM, N.C. - If the time has come for the old floor-model TV, the
eight-track tape deck, and the stacks of paper to go, Durham residents
should mark their calendars now for a free, convenient, and
environmentally friendly way to do so.

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the City of
Durham's Solid Waste Management Department will host a Paper Shredding &
E-Scrap Recycling Event in the Sears Parking Lot at Northgate Mall,
located at 1058 W. Club Boulevard, Durham.

The event, co-sponsored with Sonoco Recycling, Shimar Recycling, and
Synergy, will accept nearly all electronic devices with a cord,
including:

* Computers, laptops, keyboards, mouse, printers, monitors,
speakers, copiers, scanners, circuit boards, hard drives, computer
parts, etc.

* Stereo equipment, tape players, receivers, amplifiers, record
players, speakers, etc.

* Kitchen electronics, such as microwaves, mixers, blenders,
choppers, etc.

*         Televisions

* Telephones, cell phones, and fax machines

* Hair dryers, curling irons, and vacuum cleaners

* Power tools, cordless tools, etc.

Free confidential paper shredding will also be provided and shredding
guidelines are as follows:

* Paper accepted for shredding may contain paper clips and
staples

* Hanging file folders will not be accepted

This event will not accept large appliances, refrigerators, air
conditioners, or anything with Freon and is open to both Durham
residents and businesses. According to Larrisha McGill, waste reduction
coordinator at the City's Solid Waste Management Department, after the
success of this event at this year's Earth Day Festival, plans began
almost immediately to hold another Paper Shredding & E-Scrap Recycling
Event in the fall. "The response at Earth Day was incredible, with our
vendors telling us that they had never experienced such a response
before," McGill said. "When we saw the response, we knew that another
event was needed and worked with Northgate Mall to secure a convenient
and accessible location for our October event."

According to McGill, residents won't even have to leave their vehicles
to unload all of their old electronics and papers. "We will have staff
on hand to unload these items, so our residents won't even need to leave
their vehicles," McGill said. "We hope our residents and businesses will
take advantage of this free opportunity to keep these items out of our
landfills."

Durham residents who can't make this event can still safely and
conveniently recycle their old electronics. According to McGill,
computers and televisions are accepted for recycling throughout the
entire year at the City's Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The
facility, located at 1900 E. Club Boulevard, is open Tuesdays and
Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays through Saturdays from
7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All types of clean and dry paper products are also accepted the entire
year in the blue curbside recycling carts, such as newspapers and
inserts, magazines, catalogs, office paper, greeting cards, telephone
books, cereal boxes, junk mail, envelopes (even those with plastic
windows), yellow pages, paperback books, corrugated cardboard, and
shredded paper (in a paper bag before placing in the cart).
