Economic Incentive Agreement Geared Toward Bringing High-Tech Jobs to
Downtown

The City Council approved a $150,000 economic incentive package to help
bring a smart-phone manufacturer to Durham. The agreement with HTC
America Innovation, Inc. stipulates that the company create 75 new jobs
over a three-year period within the American Tobacco Campus. The average
salary at the proposed research and development hub is expected to be
$125,000 per year. HTC is also considering two other locations for the
hub.

Durham Collaborates with Wake County to Provide Housing Services to
Veterans

A collaboration between Durham and Wake County is working toward ending
homelessness among our area's veterans. The City Council adopted a
resolution that allows Durham to use a portion of Wake's housing choice
vouchers awarded to it under the federal veterans affairs supportive
housing program. The voucher program provides rental assistance to
homeless veterans and provides case management and clinical services
through Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. Since the
Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Durham is one of those centers, the
agreement allows Wake to have access to veterans' services located in
Durham.

Durham Police Department Develops New Mental Health Outreach Program

The City of Durham is developing a new mental health outreach program
that will help further connect law enforcement with mental health
services. A $250,000 grant from the Department of Justice to the Durham
Police Department will be used to develop the program. It will work with
partnering mental health agencies to reduce re-arrests for minor,
non-violent offenses for people with mental illness; to decrease the
number of repeat calls for service; to increase the number of
individuals engaged in mental health services; and to increase the
number of law enforcement personnel trained in de-escalation and
identifying mental illness. Sgt. Lori Ray with the Durham Police
Department explains why the outreach program is needed on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."
