DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the November 1, 2010 Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin airing on Friday, November 5 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch on-demand at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

Approval of $20 million Bond Means More Street Improvements for Durham

Now that voters have approved the $20 million street bond referendum, all city streets will be upgraded from very poor or poor condition to at least fair condition in the next couple of years. The bond money will allow approximately 150 miles of streets in the worst condition to be repaved by the end of the 2012 paving season. Once that backlog is finished, funding for routine street maintenance will be allocated in the annual operating budget. For more information on how the bond funds will be spent, visit www.DurhamOperationGreenlight.org.

Additional Funding and Contract Extension Approved for Third Fork Creek Trail

The City Council approved adding $44,032 and a 58-day extension to Durham's contract for design and field inspection services as part of Phase 1B of the Third Fork Creek Trail project. The extra money and time were needed because the project was delayed for two months due to additional permit requirements for stream buffers. Senior Project Manager Don Stewart explains where the trail is and what its status is at this point on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Twin Lakes Park Expansion Will Mean More Opportunities to Play More in Durham

Twin Lakes Park will be expanding soon. The City is paying $381,000 to buy 23 acres north of and adjacent to the park, which is located at 435 Chandler Road. While the City does not currently have the money for many additional facilities to be built at the park, the site is ready to be developed as funding becomes available. Assistant Director of Park Planning & Education Beth Timson explains why the expansion is needed and why it's such a good deal to buy the land now on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

More Progress on Durham Convention Center Improvement Project

The City Council approved a $5.6 million construction services contract to go toward Phase II of the Durham Convention Center Improvement Project. This phase will include repairs that were not funded with 2005 bond money in the first round of updates to the Center. Construction is expected to begin in January and will be phased to accommodate the 2011 events schedule at the Center. Senior Project Manager Mícheál Lynch explains which specific improvements will be included in this phase of the project on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Economic Development Incentive Grants Approved for Several Small Businesses

Several property owners in downtown Durham are getting a financial boost from the City as part of an economic development incentive program geared toward small businesses. Under Durham's economic incentive policy, the Building Improvement Grant Program is designed to encourage and provide financial assistance for small businesses to make building improvements. Attorney Cole Williams will receive $75,000 to improve the external appearance of the building located at 205 N. Church Street. Fenwick Properties will use its $75,000 for a building renovation project at 109 N. Gregson Street. And Rogers Alley, LLC will use its $75,000 grant for a building renovation project at 107 East Parrish Street.
