Fast Facts:

· The EPA Brownfields Initiative for North East Central Durham is moving forward, with a second grant to continue environmental assessment on the potential presence of hazardous and petroleum substances on select properties in the City of Durham, predominantly in Northeast Central Durham. However, properties outside of the target area of Northeast Central Durham will also be considered in this phase of the project.

· Representatives from the City of Durham’s Office of Economic & Workforce Development (OEWD) and CTC Public Benefit Corporation will be on site next week to provide information about each phase of the project to date, which included 31 environmental assessments since October 2006, as well as next steps in the initiative. Residents, community stakeholders, and developers are asked to attend to learn about the initiative and how it can be used as a financial tool for commercial development.

· The City of Durham was selected in May 2009 to receive a $400,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment grant to target petroleum and hazardous-substance contaminated properties in Northeast Central Durham. Grant activities in this phase of the initiative will continue to focus on Northeast Central Durham, which has been the target area under the City's current EPA Brownfield Assessment Project. Proposed activities to be completed with the new funding include public involvement, environmental site assessments, and clean up and redevelopment planning.

· For more information about the information session, contact Grace Dzidzienyo, senior economic development coordinator and brownfields project manager with the City’s OEWD, at (919) 560-4965, via e-mail at Grace.Dzidzienyo at DurhamNC.gov, or visit www.ctcbrownfields.com/durham. Residents may also contact Marion Lamberth, community liaison with CTC Public Benefit Corporation, at (919) 667-8277 or via e-mail at mlambco51 at aol.com.

Background:

· The City was one of three local governments in North Carolina selected for an EPA Brownfield Grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The first $200,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant was awarded in October 2006 and completed in September 2009. The success of the 2006 grant enabled the City to qualify for the $400,000 2009 ARRA grant noted above. To date, the City has received a total of $600,000 to assess development properties.

· Brownfields activities completed thus far have identified 31 properties in Northeast Central Durham through community participation, site inventory, and environmental assessment activities where known or perceived environmental contamination is complicating proposed redevelopment activities.
