[Durham INC] Street sweeping?

Trouble, maybe... since they would need to map out their plan and keep on a
schedule. Cost would be a problem in other cities, but not in Durham.
If the City posted a map that showed what neighborhoods are to be swept and
when, and even which side of which streets... they'd be able to use it
year after year.
They could post a link to that explanation here and in the city water
bill, and someone from each neighborhood could send out the timely reminder.
Only a city with the listserv coverage we enjoy could do this. Properly
organized, it would be pretty cool to see one side of a street nearly empty,
and the next day it would be the other side. It would look like a city that
thinks with one mind, and probably put a smile on the street sweeper's
face, too!

Barry,
As someone who lives on a street with a lot of trees and on-street
parking, I would at least be happy to know when to expect the street sweeping so
cars could be moved to the opposite side of the street. Although, maybe with
a city this size that doesn't make sense for the cost/trouble.

I just wanted to thank Dale McKeel, the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian
Coordinator, for taking the time to track down the relevant folks at City Hall
to answer this question. What i've learned is that, while there is no exact
schedule for street sweeping, according to city officials "it normally
takes about a month and a half to two months to get around all the curve paved
streets that the city have."
So it looks like our neighborhood will see another sweeping during
Christmas week, or perhaps earlier or later depending on how the holidays impact
things. Hopefully a phone call or two next week will pin down the exact
date.
I'll leave it as an exercise for readers of this list to determine whether
a 2 month street sweeping schedule during the fall in a city whose streets
are lined with deciduous trees is adequate or not.

Does anyone know if the city of Durham has a street sweeping schedule for
the fall published anywhere? Leaves are getting pretty deep in our
neighborhood, and i'd hate to see some of our blocks miss the opportunity to have
them swept up because too many cars were left parked in the street on the
day the sweepers come through.
Thanks,
