New "City Hall This Week" Begins Friday

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, December 24 on DTV8; All Previous
Episodes "On Demand" on the City's DTV8 Website

 

DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the December 20, 2010
Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be
featured in the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will
begin airing on Friday, December 24at 8 p.m. and will also be available
to watch on-demand at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm. 

 

City Council Adopts Ethics Policy Amendment

The City Council adopted an updated version of their Code of Ethics in
response to recent legislation by the General Assembly. That legislation
requires all North Carolina cities and counties to adopt a Code of
Ethics by January 1, 2011. The City's previous policy had to be revised
in minor ways to bring it more in line with the General Assembly's new
requirements. Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell explains what changes had to
be made and why on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

2010 COPS Hiring Grant Allows Police Department to Fill Frozen Positions

The Durham Police Department will use a $2,537,424 2010 from a COPS
Hiring Program Grant to fill officer vacancies that were frozen through
recent budget cuts. The grant program provides funding directly to law
enforcement agencies to hire or rehire career law enforcement officers
in an effort to increase their community policing capacity and crime
prevention efforts. Civilian Assistant Chief Jesse Burwell explains what
types of expenses are covered by the grant and what a difference it will
make to Durham on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

City Begins Laying Groundwork for 2010 Bond Approved Street Repaving
Projects

The City is set to begin preliminary work for the 150 miles of streets
to be repaved with the 2010 bond funds.  As part of that work, up to
$825,000 will be spent on a sanitary sewer evaluation study. The study
needs to be completed before the streets are repaved so work will not
have to be repeated sooner than expected. Civil Engineer Bryant Green
explains what the study is and more on why it needs to be performed on
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

Restoration Plans for Northeast Creek Watershed Take Shape

A $1,287,000 planning and design contract approved by the City Council
will allow the renovation of the Northeast Creek Watershed to move
forward. The plan will help determine the development and implementation
of water quality recovery efforts for the creek, which are required by
the City's stormwater permit. Assistant Stormwater Services Manager Paul
Wiebke explains what pollutants are harming the Northeast Creek
Watershed and how the plan will address them on the upcoming episode of
"City Hall This Week."

*         Sgt. Terrence Sembly - Explains how people interested in a
career in law enforcement could take part in the Durham Police
Department's upcoming police academies.

 

*         Transportation Dept. Director Mark Ahrendsen - Updates the
City's efforts to operate only hybrid buses as part of the effort to
reach its greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.

 

"City Hall This Week" is a news program dedicated to informing Durham
residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall. Each edition
is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day after
City Council meetings. It airs three times a day on Time Warner Cable
