Preservation Durham wants to formally acknowledge those who made possible
the formation of the Stokesdale historic district. Stokesdale is the first
African-American residential historic district in Durham, North Carolina on
the National Register of Historic Places . Special thanks go to Carolyn
Green Boone, J.D. , founder and fund advisor of The Shepard Alliance For
Enlightenment Fund of The Triangle Community Foundation. Via The S.A.F.E.
Fund, Ms. Boone applied for, pledged the match for and ultimately obtained a
Certified Local Government matching grant for the City Of Durham from the
North Carolina Department Of Cultural Resources to fund the district’s
formation.
Carrie Mowry, who previously mapped out the district and got it on the
study list while employed with Preservation Durham, assisted Ms. Boone with
preparation of the CLG application. Ms. Mowry also previously obtained
$5,000. from the Mary Duke Trent Biddle Semans Foundation. Former PD
executive director, John Compton pledged this amount as contributing
matching funds, in support of Boone’s application,at the requisite CLG grant
approval hearing before the local historic preservation commission .
Once the $20,000 CLG grant was awarded (with $8,000. designated as the
matching portion), Sarah Young of the Durham City/County Planning Department
collected the matching funds from P.D. and The S.A.F.E. Fund. Ms. Young
also published requests for proposals and hired Heather Wagner, of hmw
Preservation, who completed the research and documentation for the
Stokesdale District. Throughout the formation process, April Johnson with
P.D., Heather Wagner, and Ann Swallow with the ( N.C.Department Of Cultural
Resources) hosted several informational meetings for the public at the
historic Stanford L. Warren library.
Warm and profound thanks are extended to all of the individuals and entities
who contributed to this historic accomplishment. Please read more soon on
Preservation Durham’s website (www.preservationdurham.org) and the Spring
edition of PD’s newsletter.
For information on how to make tax-deductible contributions to The S.A.F.E.
Fund of The Triangle Community Foundation, please email Ms. Boone at
