Durham Council Member Appointed to National League of Cities'

Community and Economic Development Steering Committee

DURHAM, N.C. - National League of Cities President James Mitchell, Jr.
has announced the appointment of Durham City Council Member Farad Ali to
the National League of Cities' (NLC) 2011 Community and Economic
Development Policy and Advocacy Steering Committee.

This committee has the lead responsibility for developing NLC federal
policy positions in the areas of community and economic development,
financial institutions, international trade, housing, land use, and
recreation. As a member of the committee, Ali will play a key role in
shaping NLC's policy positions, while advocating on behalf of America's
cities and towns on Capitol Hill, with the Administration, and at home.
According to Ali, the opportunity to serve on this committee will allow
him to learn more about best practices from around the country that
could be applied in Durham. "I am honored to be appointed to serve the
city as a member of the NLC Community and Economic Development Steering
Committee," Ali said. "I will embrace this opportunity to learn best
practices in community and economic development that I will share with
my constituents and colleagues."

The chair of this year's Community and Economic Development Committee is
Gilbert Lopez, council member, Coolidge, Ariz. Serving as this year's
vice chairs are Neal Andrews, council member, Ventura, Calif., and Jim
Fairchild, mayor, Dallas, Ore. To learn more about this steering
committee, visit the NCL website at
www.nlc.org/inside_nlc/committees___councils/1922.aspx.

The NLC is the nation's oldest and largest organization devoted to
strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership
and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns,
and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans. For more
