Durham Council Member Appointed to National League of Cities'

Human Development Steering Committee

Mayor Pro Tempore Also Appointed to NBC-LEO Board of Directors

DURHAM, N.C. - National League of Cities President James Mitchell, Jr.,
has announced the reappointment of City of Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Cora
Cole-McFadden to the National League of Cities' (NLC) 2011 Human
Development Steering Committee.

This committee has the responsibility for developing NLC policies on
employment and job training, early childhood development, temporary
assistance to needy families (TANF), unemployment insurances, income
support programs, immigration and refugee policy, health and education,
equal opportunity, and social services. Cole-McFadden was first
appointed to the committee in 2009. As a member of the committee,
Cole-McFadden will play a key role in shaping NLC's policy positions,
while advocating on behalf of America's cities and towns on Capitol
Hill, with the Administration, and at home. To learn more about this
committee, visit the NCL website at
www.nlc.org/inside_nlc/committees___councils/1924.aspx.

In addition to serving again on this committee, Cole-McFadden was also
recently appointed to the National Black Caucus of Local Elected
Officials (NBC-LEO) Board of Directors as a Regional Director
representing Region 18. The NBC-LEO was created in 1970 to represent the
interests of African American elected officials. NBC-LEO's objectives
include increasing African American participation on the NLC's steering
and policy committees to ensure that policy and program recommendations
reflect African American concerns and benefit their communities. The
organization also works independently with its members to inform them on
issues affecting the African American community and helps to devise ways
to achieve their community objectives through legislation and direct
action. NBC-LEO conducts its annual meetings in conjunction with NLC's
Congress of Cities and the Congressional City Conference. To learn more
about the NBC-LEO, visit the NLC website at
www.nlc.org/inside_nlc/constituency_groups/nbc_leo/822.aspx.

The NLC is the nation's oldest and largest organization devoted to
strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership
and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns,
and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans. For more
information, visit www.nlc.org.
