Durham Neighborhood Receives 65 New Trees Sunday

DURHAM, N.C. - On Sunday, February 27, residents living along Green
Street will have 65 new trees to enjoy during the coming years, thanks
to the efforts of the Trinity Heights Neighborhood, Duke University,
Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc., and the City of Durham.

Beginning at 1:30 p.m., volunteers from the Trinity Heights Neighborhood
Association, Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, and the City's
Urban Forestry Division will gather at the corner of Green and Berkeley
Streets before heading out to begin planting 65 new trees along Green
Street between Buchanan Avenue and Broad Street as well as along Broad
Street between Markham Avenue and Green Street.

According to Alex Johnson, manager of the Urban Forestry Division in the
City's General Services Department, the new trees are Trident Maples
(Acer Buegeranium) and were chosen because they are hardy understory
trees that are known for their urban toughness, long lifespan, and
brilliant fall colors. "Trident Maples do not grow very tall, so there
will be no problems with these new trees growing into the existing power
lines," Johnson said. "Duke Energy is very particular about what they
will allow to grow under their transmission lines. These trees will be
well within height tolerances when they reach their mature height in 20
years and should blend in well with the existing landscape."

The new trees were purchased using funds donated by the Trinity Heights
Neighborhood Association, a matching grant from Duke University, and
funds from Keep Durham Beautiful's Durham Tree Alliance. Safety apparel
for participants is also being provided courtesy of Keep Durham
Beautiful. "The community of Trinity Heights approached the City in the
spring of 2010 for possible tree planting projects that they could
partner with us on. They agreed to the need in this area of Green Street
and supplied some of the necessary funding to make Sunday's planting
happen," Johnson said. "This planting is the result of a real
partnership between the community, Duke, and the City. The end result is
going to be wonderful for this neighborhood."

According to Johnson, this is the second tree planting in the Trinity
Heights Neighborhood. The first tree planting, which took place in
November 2010, planted 60 new Sioux Crepe Myrtles along Green Street
between Buchanan Avenue and Broad Street.

Residents interested in volunteering for Sunday's planting should
contact Johnson no later than Friday, February 25, 2011, by 5 p.m. to
ensure that enough planting tools and safety apparel is on hand for all
participants. Light refreshments will be provided for volunteers
courtesy of the Trinity Heights Neighborhood Association.

For more information about Sunday's event or for on-site media
assistance at the tree planting, contact Johnson at (919) 560-4197, ext.
21275 or via e-mail at Alex.Johnson at DurhamNC.gov.
