-----------

Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) will make a presentation and hold a question and answer session about the demolishing what is referred to as the “BB&T” building, at the corner of Watts St and Club Blvd . The building is also known as the former Tharrington’s building and the Word of Faith Church. It is across the street from Biscuitville and an auto mechanic shop. Upon DENR’s request the City of Durham condemned the “BB&T” building because of its high level of toxicity from dry cleaning chemicals.

There is a public meeting before Division of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) Dry-Cleaning Solvent and Cleanup Act Program (DSCA) that to focus only on demolishing the "BB&T building.

Letter from Billy Meyer, project manager of BBB&T site said ---

“Pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-215.104L, on behalf of Branch Banking and Trust (BB&T), the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR’s) private contractor has prepared a Notice of Intent to Remediate a Dry-Cleaning Solvent Facility or Abandoned Site (NOI). The purpose of this Summary of the NOI is to notify the community and invite comment on the proposed interim remedy for the Facility Site.....

An investigation of the extent of contamination at the Facility Site has been concluded and dry-cleaning contamination in soil, groundwater, and indoor air have been identified. Based on the risks posed by the contamination, the proposed interim remedy includes demolishing the on-site building, and instituting land-use restrictions to control current and future risks. These interim measures are intended to control risks at the Facility Site while DENR determines the best remedial strategy to address all the affected properties.

....The elements of the complete NOI are included in the Interim Risk Management Plan (RMP) which is available online at www.ncdsca.org, under “Public Notices”.

The public comment period begins February 27, 2011 and ends April 13, 2011.

At the public meeting, DENR and its independent contractor will provide a summary of the proposed interim remedy and answer questions directly related to the proposed activities [emphasis added. DENR’s presentation and question and answer session is only about tearing down the BB&T building.]

All comments must be in writing and submitted to DENR no later than April 13, 2011 [emphasis added]. Requests for additional information should be directed to Billy Meyer [BB&T Project Manager] at 508-8415.” All comments should be sent to:

Please save the meeting date and spread the word about the meeting and public comment period. There needs to be a good turn out at the public meeting about demolishing the “BB&T” building to show DENR of peoples’ interest and concern, to raise questions and make comments.

If you would like more details, to learn how you and/or any organizations you are involved with can become involved please call me at 403-2248. I and the Trinity Park Neighborhood Association Perc Committee would really appreciate your attending to the meeting, spreading the word and writing public comments to DENR.

There will be a public hearing about the plans for “remediating the site” at a latter.
