DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the March 21, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show begins airing on
Friday, March 25 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch on demand
at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

City Council Adopts Budget Development Guidelines

The City Council adopted guidelines that will lead to the development of
the FY 2011-2012 Budget. The guidelines are an important part of
preparing a budget that reflects the agreed-upon priorities of both the
City Council and the Administration. Some of the highlights of the
guidelines include a potential property tax rate increase for increases
in debt service costs; no funding for the non-city agency program;
$150,000 will be included to help fund agencies that support
homelessness and homelessness prevention services; and $437,000 to be
committed over four years to complete existing housing activities in
Southwest Central Durham and Northeast Central Durham.

City Council Supports Alston Avenue Widening

The City Council voted to support the North Carolina Department of
Transportation's proposal to proceed with the widening of Alston Avenue.
The project would widen the highway to four lanes between the N.C.
Highway 147 and N.C. Highway 98. The Council approved the project
because it uses a revised alignment than what was previously proposed in
order to preserve the Los Primos Grocery Store located at Main Street
and Alston Avenue. Transportation Planner Ellen Beckmann explains more
about what will be included in the project on the upcoming episode of
"City Hall This Week."

Durham to Use Transportation Grant Funds to Better Track Use of the Bus
System

The City, in collaboration with Chapel Hill Transit and Triangle
Transit, will use transportation grant funds to better track how many
people are using the bus system. The grant will provide $78,792 of the
$98,490 needed to buy automatic passenger counting devices. Durham will
have to pay a local match of $19,698. Senior Transportation Planner
Pierre Osei-Owusu explains why the more precise information is needed
and what it could mean for future bus routes on the upcoming episode of
"City Hall This Week."

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

* Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator Dale McKeel - Explains how changes
to the DurhamWalks! Pedestrian Plan are expected to help create a more
pedestrian-friendly city.

* Senior Planner Helen Youngblood - Explains why the development of
Durham's first-ever Urban Open Space Plan is important for the City and
its residents.
