"Keeping electronic wastes out of our landfills not only extends the life of the landfills but more importantly helps protect our environment from the impact of harmful components contained in electronics like mercury, lead and cadmium," said Brian Haynesworth, solid waste program manager for the Durham County General Services Department. "Citizens should note that beginning July 1, 2011, computers and other electronics will be banned from our County Convenience Sites as a result of the landfill disposal ban scheduled to take effect in North Carolina."
Citizens are urged not to bring large appliances, refrigerators, air conditioners, or any other appliances that contain Freon to the Paper Shredding and E-Waste Recycling Event.
This Saturday, free and confidential paper shredding will also be provided to citizens. When dropping off paper, citizens do not have to remove paper clips and staples. Hanging file folders will not be accepted.
For more information about this upcoming shredding and electronics waste collection event contact Haynesworth at (919) 560-0433 or via email at bhaynesworth at durhamcountync.gov
