Durham Named Tree City USA for 27th Year
DURHAM, N.C. - Tree lovers in Durham have one more thing to be proud
about thanks to a recent award naming the City of Durham a "Tree City
USA" for the 27th year because of its commitment to urban forestry.
The Tree City USA(r) Program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in
cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of
State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public
attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry
programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 135 million
Americans call home.
In order to receive the "Tree City USA" recognition, the City's Urban
Forestry Division in the General Services Department met four standards,
including a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a
comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance
and proclamation. Durham is one of only 77 "Tree Cities" in North
Carolina.
"We commend Durham's elected officials, volunteers, and its residents
for providing vital care for its urban forest," said John Rosenow, chief
executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees provide
numerous environmental, economical, and health benefits to millions of
people each day, and we applaud communities that make planting and
caring for trees a top priority."
