Yeah, I know, I know. Most of us have no clue what we want for our next birthdays, so it's a stretch to think about what the state needs to do with its long-range transportation plan -- what should NC-DOT think about 2040. There is one open question, where you could put in things like needing better traffic calming. There is also one pretty stupid question about what part of environmental protection is most important. But it worth putting your 2-cents. Note that the study loaded slowly for me.

>From the NC Department of Transportation:

Because transportation projects take years to plan, design and build, the NC Department of Transportation must look ahead 25 to 30 years to identify the transportation needs of the state. The department is launching an effort to update its Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan and wants the input of all North Carolinians to ensure the plan truly reflects their needs and which will be most critical in the future. All people need to do is take a brief survey to give their input.

The plan, called the 2040 Plan, will serve as the blueprint that will guide transportation planning and investment over the next 30 years. It will focus on sustainable policies and programs across all transportation types (modes) needed to enhance safety, improve mobility and reduce congestion for North Carolinians.

Other opportunities for involvement will be available as NCDOT updates the plan. Here are ways to participate in planning North Carolina’s future:

• Complete our survey online; via NCDOT’s phone-friendly mobile website at m.ncdot.gov or request a survey be sent to you. Encourage family, neighbors, co-workers, church associates or club members to take the survey and submit it to NCDOT;
• Attend a meeting of the organizations in your area that coordinate transportation planning locally to hear a presentation about the 2040 Plan and provide your comments. Click here for information on these local transportation planning organizations called Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) in urban areas and Rural Planning Organizations (RPO) in rural areas;
• Follow progress on the plan by checking the website for new information and postings;
• Sign up to receive email notices about new postings and new activities for the 2040 Plan, or join the project postal mailing list to receive copies of the 2040 Plan Fact Sheet updates; or
• Ask NCDOT to make a presentation to your favorite local organization.

If you want more information and to request the survey or a presentation call 1-877-DOT-4YOU (368-4968) or write to 2040 Plan Update, NCDOT, 1501 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1501. More information about the plan and NCDOT’s “Policy to Projects” process is available on NCDOT’s website, and NCDOT’s mobile site, m.ncdot.gov.
