City Administration Unveils 2011-2012 Proposed $362.4 Million Budget

The City Council is now considering and receiving feedback on the
proposed $362.4 million budget for next year. The City Administration's
proposed spending plan includes a tax increase of $0.56 cents per $100
of assessed property value for debt service. The increase would raise
the annual taxes for the owner of a $150,000 home by $8.40. City Manager
Tom Bonfield offers more details on the proposed budget on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."

City Council Approves Stormwater Rate Increase

The City's stormwater rate will be going up by 8.5 percent. The increase
will go toward the addition of a new Water Quality Analyst in connection
with the Jordan Lake Rules, a reclassification of an existing stormwater
maintenance position, and the replacement of seven street cleaning and
stormwater maintenance vehicles. The rate increase will go into effect
on July 1. Public Works Department Public Education Coordinator Laura
Smith explains how the increase is expected to impact residents on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Commercial Meter Replacement Project Set to Begin

The City Council approved a $1,678,394 contract for the first phase of
the City's commercial meter replacement project. The project includes
upgrading 360 manual-read commercial water meters to new remote-read
meters. The program is part of Durham's automated meter reading project
to replace all residential and commercial manual-read meters with the
remote-read meters. By the time the project is complete, approximately
2,800 commercial meters will have been replaced.
