Before this issue gets too far down the track, with resolutions and all, let's consider two things:
1) As the article points out, there will be no immediate action on this proposal by the Council. The Administration is considering the proposal, but it will not be enacted in FY 11-12. The community will have plenty of time to discuss it further.
2) I suggest that INC invites Mr. Long and his senior staff to an upcoming meeting to discuss both the fee proposal and the full range of solid waste issues. There is some merit to the fee-based scheme, and we should learn about it. The Solid Waste staff could address Kelly's and others' concerns.
After the presentation, INC and its member neighborhoods could then make informed decisions.
The recent Transportation presentation was one of the best programs INC has had in some time and is a model for future presentations. Let's do the same thing for Solid Waste.
Six years ago INC took the lead in working for positive changes in our Solid Waste system. The later Randy Pickle worked very hard on our behalf.
Now that Solid Waste is planning to take its efforts to the next level, it's a good time for INC to take the lead again.
