Where in the Triangle?
1. Vote for TLC in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good giveaway THIS FRIDAY!
Vote for Triangle Land Conservancy on June 3rd in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good Program
Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program is off and running and we are in the bullpen, warming up for our big day -- this Friday!
Please take a moment on Friday to vote for TLC! We will be competing against four other nonprofits for the most votes on Facebook that day at facebook.com/toyota. The organization with the most votes will get a new car!
Are you worried you'll forget? Here are a few ways to make sure you don't.
* Become our friend on Facebook. We'll send you a reminder.
* Go to Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good Facebook page, and set a reminder to vote on June 3! Just go to “View Contestants”, “Search by Date”, and select June 3. Click “remind me to vote this day.”
So VOTE FOR TLC on Friday, June 3, and please tell your friends, too! Thank you!!!
2. Work. Shop. Vote. Celebrate Land Trust Day with TLC!
Great Outdoor Provision Co., a Raleigh-based outdoor gear retailer, began Land Trust Day in 1992 as a way of giving back to groups protecting the great outdoors of North Carolina. There are several ways to celebrate, including getting your hands dirty, shopping and simply clicking your mouse!
* Volunteer for our workday on June 4, 1-4 p.m., at the Irvin Nature Preserve west of Carrboro. Volunteers are needed to help move the tepee (how many people can say they have moved a tepee???) and work in the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle's garden. If you are interested in helping out, let Walt know at wtysinger at triangleland.org. Hope to see you out there!
* Shop at local merchants donating a percentage of sales to TLC. The first Saturday of June, businesses across the state support their local land trusts by donating a percentage of their sales, supporting membership drives, or by making donations. Businesses involved in Land Trust Day 2011 include:
Great Outdoor Provision Company – 10% of sales – Cameron Village in Raleigh and Eastgate Shopping Center in Chapel Hill
Twig – 5% of sales – Chapel Hill
Vaguely Reminiscent – 20% of sales – Durham
Cozy – 10% of sales – Durham
Wild Bird Center – 10% of sales – Chapel Hill
Please support these businesses as they support TLC!
* Vote for TLC. Click over to the Great Outdoor Provision Co. website and vote for TLC. We are competing against our North Carolina land trust peers for a $500 grant. Voting ends tomorrow night (June 2) so don't delay!
3. You can help TLC meet our fiscal year-end challenge
Give every year. Be a local conservation champion every day.Your support empowers TLC with the resources to protect our waterways, farms and open spaces and build partnerships that better connect people to the land. Together we are local conservation champions building a stronger, greener community. We've set a goal to raise $50,000 toward our Annual Fund by June 30, the end of our fiscal year. The good news is that we're already more than halfway there. And you can help us get the rest of the way. Whether it's a first-time gift, an additional Annual Fund donation or joining the TLC Steward monthly giving program your donation makes a tangible, lasting difference for
local conservation across the Triangle. Help us meet our goal by making your tax-deductible donation today.
4. Kick off summer with a paddle on the Haw June 11
Let's celebrate the end of the school year with a relaxing paddle on the Haw! The flatwater upstream of the dam is especially well-suited for young and novice paddlers, with smooth paddling and plenty to see. In 2006, land on both sides of the Haw River upstream of the dam at Highway 15-501 in Bynum, NC was added to the Haw Slopes State Natural Area because of its biological and ecological significance. Find out more about this paddle trip.
5. A penny for clean water
On May 3, the Raleigh city council voted to invest in land conservation as a means to safeguard water quality. The vote put in place a 1-cent-per-100-gallons-of-water fee for all users of drinking water produced by the City of Raleigh, which supplies water to approximately 450,000 people. The watershed protection fee will support Triangle Land Conservancy and its partners in the work of the Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative. Read more about this on our blog.
6. Irvin Learning Farm… the perfect spot for Summer Outdoor Learning Adventures!
Summer is just around the bend and Irvin Learning Farm has ten exciting weeks of summer camps planned for June 13 – August 19. Learn about wild edibles in the Incredible Edibles camp. Discover the critters living in and around the creek, pond, forest and fields in the Track and Trail session. Work with nature’s materials during the Artists in Nature week. Explore scientific tools in The Outdoor Lab session or build "secret places" during our Fantastic Forts and other Hideouts week.
These are only some of the many themes children can explore this summer at Irvin Learning Farm. To find out more about summer offerings online.
7. Raleigh community gardens zoning
TLC is leasing space from Progress Energy for a community garden on Halifax Street in Raleigh, close to our offices. The only hang up? Raleigh zoning rules stipulate a property's only use cannot be for a community garden -- there must be a church, school, or other purpose to the site. TLC and the City of Raleigh are working on this. New zoning rules would allow this property, and other sites like it, to be used as a community garden. The zoning rules are open for public comment online through Monday, June 6. So, Raleigh residents, be sure to add your two cents!
8. WakeNature receives Regional Raleigh Environmental Award
WakeNature was awarded the Regional Raleigh Environmental Award in April for demonstrating environmental stewardship for the region. WakeNature is a partnership of TLC, NC State University, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Wake County and others. This group provides resources to identify ecologically valuable, publicly-owned open spaces within Wake County, and to build capacity for appropriate management and long-term stewardship of those areas.
9. Oh, the memories...Green Jamboree 2011
Over 300 people turned out to celebrate local conservation at the Green Jamboree! And why not? The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, the music was lively, and there was plenty of activity, including hikes and horse-led hayrides! Thanks to everyone who shared this day with us. We can't wait for next year! Until then, check out our photos on Flickr!
10. TLC supporter Andrea Reusing wins Best Chef of the Southeast
Congratulations to Andrea Reusing, owner of the Lantern restaurant, for winning Best Chef of the Southeast at the James Beard Foundation’s annual awards gala! Andrea and her husband, Mac, have supported TLC for many years, and Andrea served on our Working Lands Task Force. We appreciate her commitment to local food and preserving natural space in the Triangle.
Read more about Andrea and Mac in our October 2007 profile. Read more about the James Beard Foundation award at the N&O. And check out Lantern’s website.
11. Where in the Triangle?
The "Where in the Triangle?" quiz is taking a break. Apparently, it doesn't have kids still in school! The quiz was last seen at the eagle viewing platform on Jordan Lake in the May E-News. If you know the perfect July destination for the quiz, snap a picture and send it to me (along with the answer, please!) at enews at triangleland.org. Thanks!
Every day, gifts to the Annual Fund make it possible for TLC to continue protecting our green spaces, farms and waterways as the only local conservation group working across all six counties of the Triangle. Your Annual Fund gifts are so important, enabling TLC to use those unrestricted dollars where they are most needed to support our mission. You make the difference:
Give every year. Be a local conservation champion every day.
As always, thanks for reading E-News!
