WEEKEND LANE CLOSURES FOR SOUTHBOUND DURHAM FREEWAY

RALEIGH - Southbound lanes of the Durham Freeway in the downtown section
of the city will be closed overnight this weekend, and there will also
be daytime lane closures as work continues on a N.C. Department of
Transportation project to improve the highway between Swift Avenue (Exit
14) and T.W. Alexander Drive (Exit 7).

Crews will be milling off the top layer of asphalt on the inside
shoulder of the southbound lanes between Briggs Avenue (Exit 10A) and
Swift Avenue, and then re-paving the shoulder.

All southbound lanes will be closed between Briggs Avenue and
Fayetteville Road (Exit 12) from 11 p.m. on Friday, June 3, until 5 a.m.
on Saturday. The left lane on that stretch of highway will remain closed
during daytime hours to allow crews to repave the shoulder. The process
will be repeated Saturday night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from
Fayetteville Road to Swift Avenue. The left lane on that section will
remain closed on Sunday for paving work.

Detours in place for the overnight closures are as follows:

Friday night - Southbound Durham Freeway closed from Fayetteville Road
to Briggs Avenue:

*	Exit at Fayetteville Road (Exit 12);
*	Follow Morehead Avenue, cross Roxboro Street to Fayetteville
Road;
*	Turn left on Fayetteville Road;
*	Turn right on Pettigrew Street;
*	Turn right on Briggs Avenue; and
*	Turn left onto southbound Durham Freeway.

Motorists who want to go to Alston Avenue (Exit 11) would follow the
detour route above, but turn right from Pettigrew onto Chatham Place,
which becomes Gann Street and intersects with Alston Avenue. Motorists
who want to exit at Briggs Avenue should follow the detour route.

Saturday night - Southbound Durham Freeway closed from Swift Avenue to
Fayetteville Road:

*	Exit at Swift Avenue (Exit 14);
*	Turn right at the top of the ramp onto Swift Avenue;
*	Turn left onto Duke University Road, which will become West
Chapel Hill Street;
*	Turn right onto Gregson Street/Vickers Road;
*	Turn left onto Morehead Avenue; and
*	Follow the ramp onto southbound Durham Freeway.

Motorists who want to go to Chapel Hill Street (Exit 13) will follow the
detour. Motorists who want to go to Fayetteville Road will follow the
detour, but instead of going on the ramp back on the Freeway, will
continue on Morehead Avenue to Fayetteville Road.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information,
stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

This $4.2 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project calls
for diamond grinding of the road surface, the replacement of concrete
pavement slabs, and asphalt shoulder reconstruction. Diamond grinding is
used to remove a thin layer from the top of the roadway to make a
smoother surface, and in turn a better ride for motorists. That also
helps reduce the breaking up of the roadway surface, extending its
lifespan. The project is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 1.
