DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the June 20, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
this episode of "City Hall This Week." The show begins airing on Friday,
June 24 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch on demand at
www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

City Council Approves 2011-2012 $362.5 million Budget

The City's 2011-2012 Budget is now in place. The $362.5 million spending
plan includes a 0.56-cent property tax increase per $100 of assessed
value, increasing the total property tax rate to 55.75 cents per $100 of
assessed value. This tax rate increase on a house valued at $150,000
increases the annual tax bill by $8.40. The budget also allows the City
to strengthen its focus on revitalizing neighborhoods and furthering
downtown improvements while addressing deferred maintenance, street
repaving, and public safety needs. For more information about the
2011-2012 budget, visit

City Council Renews Contract with Downtown Durham, Inc.

The City is extending its economic development relationship with
Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI). This will be the fifth year that the
organization has provided a variety of services to the City - all geared
toward spurring economic revitalization in downtown. The contract with
DDI over the next year is for $148,048. DDI President Bill Kalkhof
explains what the organization accomplished last year and what its goals
are for the year ahead on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Durham Parks and Recreation and Schools to Share Facilities at No Extra
Cost

An interlocal agreement between Durham Parks and Recreation and Durham
Public Schools will make it possible for them to rent each other's
facilities without having to pay. Up until now, they both have spent
close to $20,000 a year renting each other's facilities. The schools
primarily rent swimming pools for their high school teams and tennis
courts for middle schools without their own courts. Durham Parks and
Recreation primarily rents gymnasiums at the schools. The goal of the
agreement is to prevent the need of one public agency paying to use the
facility of another public agency when their missions overlap.

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

* Human Resources Director Alethea Bell - Explains how a new job
texting service offered by the City will work.

* Assistant Stormwater Manager Paul Wiebke - Explains what is
being done to expedite the re-routing of a failing drainage system
underneath Nana's Restaurant and the Rockwood Building.

* Durham Parks and Recreation Staff and Elected Leaders - Offer
a look at why the new Discovery High Ropes Course has placed Durham in a
league of its own for recreation opportunities in the Triangle.
