Premise: "Our mission is to promote the quality, stability and vitality of Durham’s residential neighborhoods."

While I support most Development, including 751, I'd submit that it is an example of an issue, for which INC should take-up and submit resolutions. The opponents of the project, even if I disagree with them, have as their fundamental position, that the creation of this project will directly infringe on the well being, atmosphere and will cause a direct, tangible, immediate, adverse, local effect onthe lives of hundreds of Durham Citizens, were it to be created.

INC, a "residential neighborhood" organization, should take the lead in either supporting, or opposing, such a project. Gay Marriage, War Funding and such items are important, yes, but are not matters which are paramount to the "stability" and success of Durham Neighborhoods.

They are important issues, but do not warrant the intercession of a Residential Neighborhood Organization.

Subject: Marriage/ DP is a local issue

Dear INC friends,
I believe that the proposed NC Constitutional Amendment is a local Durham issue,
too, in that the language as proposed would cast doubt on the legality of the
domestic partner (DP) insurance and employment benefits provided to Durham City
and County government employees. In fact, the vague language of the proposed
constitutional amendment would also appear to place domestic partner benefits
provided by private employers in jeopardy.

If passed, the constitutional amendment may lead to expensive litigation against
our City and County governments in an attempt to end DP benefits.

I respect the debate on whether the INC should address local issues, and not
general national and state political issues. Whichever way that policy issue is
resolved, I believe that the anti-marriage equality constitutional amendment
does address a Durham issue.

If I were to offer any 'friendly' amendment to the excellent resolution as
proposed, it would be to have it ask our legislators to adopt marriage equality.
In other words, I think there is opportunity to foment a backlash against the
attempt to write bigotry into our state constitution, and gain true equality.

Thanks all of you for helping keep Durham neighborhoods strong,
Sherri
