Thanks, Julie, for your response, which corresponds to my experience with listservs also, and makes a lot of sense.
Cheers -

Subject: Re: [Durham INC] **INC War Funding & Gay Marriage Resolutions**
Just popped in for a few minutes to see what all the fuss was about. I wanted to clarify one small point:
"Can we discuss national politics on neighborhood listservs? Of course, but you rarely see much of that. There is no one standing guard over neighborhood listservs and forbidding discussions of any kind."
It is my understanding that political discussions are indeed verboten on some neighborhood listservs and that there are indeed moderators who stand guard over some of them. Perhaps irrelevant to the current discussion, but there you have it.
With regard to the current discussion, if I had a vote, which I don't, I would without a moment's hesitation vote to keep INC focused strictly on local matters. Really, why would INC want to waste it's time on a total redundancy? It's not like there's this big hole in the internet where a gazillion blogs, listservs, and forums discussing national politics ought to be. Nor will I entertain the notion that there is anyone in Durham who is connected to the internet and remotely interested in national politics who is not privy to these discussions. Repeating them here would reach no one new, nor give them any new insights on national issues, in my firm opinion.
I agree that INC would be well served by adopting a policy on the selection of issues for discussion. And the sooner, the better, sounds like.
