Hello Everyone,

This is a reminder that Durham Area Designers (a non-profit organization of architects, designers, urban planners, and landscape architects) will be leading  a Public Design Workshop – Saturday July 30th, 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Eastway Elementary School Media Center.  (Eastway Elementary is at the corner of Taylor St. and S. Alston Ave., five blocks north of E. Main St.)

This workshop is also being sponsored by the Golden Belt Neighborhood Association, the Eastway Village Neighborhood Association, Scientific Properties, and the Durham Rescue Mission.

The Durham Rescue Mission wants to expand. They originally proposed closing streets, rezoning entire residential blocks, and removing at least eleven contributing structures in the Golden Belt National Register Historic District.  This workshop is an attempt to come up with a better plan that will work for both the Rescue Mission and the surrounding neighborhoods.

This is an important test of how far a non-profit can go in changing a neighborhood and an historic district in pursuit of their own goals.  Even if your neighborhood is on the other side of Durham, you have a stake in the outcome.

Please try to attend.  Even if you cannot stay for the entire workshop, please come for as long as you can.

Please try to get design professionals in your neighborhood to attend and lend their expertise.  Please forward to your neighborhood listserv.

Thanks.

John
