Durham Installs New Left-Turn Traffic Signal

First Signal to Be Placed on Fayetteville Road at Juliette Drive

DURHAM, N.C. - Motorists will soon see a new type of left-turn traffic
signal along Durham's streets that should enhance safety for left-turn
movements at busy intersections.

The City of Durham's Transportation Department will evaluate the new
traffic signal at the intersection of Fayetteville Road and Juliette
Drive, which is scheduled to be operational in mid August.

According to Larry McGlothlin, transportation engineer with the City's
Transportation Department, this change is the result of a decade-long
study conducted by the Federal Highway Administration, which
demonstrated that the new signals helped prevent crashes, moved more
traffic through an intersection, and provided additional traffic
management flexibility.

"The department's plans are to incorporate the new left-turn signals
along the Erwin Road corridor within the next year," McGlothlin said.
"These new signal displays are designed to make it easier for drivers to
know what to do when making a left turn and reduce accidents at
signalized intersections. The key for drivers to remember is what the
signal colors mean - red means stop, yellow means use caution, and green
means proceed. The new traffic signal has a flashing yellow arrow, which
means left turns are permitted but drivers must yield to oncoming
traffic, pedestrians, and bicyclists."
