Durham Exceeds 2011 Paving Season Goals
Harvard Avenue Paving Commemorated During Today's Event
DURHAM, N.C. - With the residents of Harvard Avenue looking on, the City
of Durham officially opened the newly paved street today and shared that
the end result for the 2011 Paving Season by-far exceeded City goals.
During this morning's ceremony at the East Durham Community Center,
attendees heard from Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell, City Manager Tom
Bonfield, and Public Works Director Marvin Williams about the effort
behind the completion of the Harvard Avenue Street Improvement Project,
accomplishments thus far during this season's street repaving efforts,
and what they can expect in 2012 as the City works to finish repaving
the worst streets.
According to Mayor Bell, roads and sidewalks are an integral part to
linking the community, improving mobility, and stimulating our local
economy. "With recent revitalization activities and increased
investments throughout Durham, we have seen how investments in the
City's infrastructure can make business investments in Durham even more
attractive, which has a positive impact on our local economy," Bell
said.
Durham's repaving efforts are being funded from recent bonds funds
totaling $37.5 million, with the City investing more in repaving this
year than it's ever invested in a single year. Thus far this year,
repaving expenditures have totaled more than $11.7 million, paid for by
the 2010 and 2007 voter-approved bond referenda.
According to Williams, the City has added almost 102 miles of freshly
paved streets in Durham this year, of which 78 miles were paid for with
the 2010 bond. This is substantially ahead of the goal for this year
and additional streets will be repaved during the remainder of this
season, ultimately adding to this year's final total. The original goal
for the City's four 2010 bond-funded paving contractors for this year
was 75 miles. "A special thanks should be given to Triangle Paving and
Grading, Barnhill Contracting Company, Fred Smith Company, and Rea
Contracting for a job well done this season," Williams said. "A
tremendous amount of work was accomplished and I hope our residents are
pleased with our progress and their much smoother streets."
Williams assured the attendees that even though a tremendous amount of
work was finished this paving season, the department is not done yet
with catching up on the backlog of streets. "Beginning next April as we
head into the 2012 Paving Season, our contractors will be tackling the
remaining miles of streets that were ranked as poor or very poor by our
2007 survey," Williams said. "Judging from the work accomplished this
season, I feel very confident that they will get these miles of streets
repaved and fulfill our promise to Durham's voters."
As the ceremony came to a close, Bonfield stressed that the City is
dedicated to keeping up with street repaving needs on an annual basis so
the organization will never face such a backlog of deteriorating streets
again. "I want to assure the residents of Durham that the Public Works
Department is committed to keeping our streets in the best shape
possible as part of our Strategic Plan goal of ensuring a
well-maintained infrastructure."
